Dr. Joseph Lichter is the director of the Office of Pre-Health Advising and also an associate teaching professor in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department. He is a native Floridian who earned degrees from Florida State University (BS Biochemistry) and Emory University (PhD Chemistry) before joining FIU. Dr. Lichter is also a fellow of the Honors College, where he teaches regularly, including a popular course entitled "the Tao of Sports" where he uses sports as a springboard for multidisciplinary studies ranging from STEM-focused (physics, chemistry, biology, engineering) to more social, political and even religious elements. On the weekends, he changes roles from Dr. Lichter to USAT-certified Coach Joey, coaching the FIU triathlon club. As an ultra-triathlete himself, he is one of only a small subset of about 200 people in the world to have ever complete a deca-iron distance triathlon (24-mile swim/1,120-mile bike/262-mile run). He brings his passion for being able to achieve the impossible with him to the Office of Pre-Health Advising to help the students learn and achieve the careers that best fit them.
